Is your relationship in the gutter?
« on: November 09, 2008, 12:19:09 AM »
Okay guys, I started playing poker like everyone else from my generation after seeing rounders. I picked up the game really fast and absourbed all info I could on it. I didnt start gambling for real untill moneymaker won the wsop main event. Then it was on. I have since then quit playing religiously for 2 years and am just now finding my love for the game again. Anyway back on topic...

So how do you ask have I managed to spend countless hours on the computer and in card rooms without servearly pissing off my lover?

Simple, TEACH THEM HOW TO PLAY

this is very important as I have almost lost one gf to the game and seen my current love life doomed to the same course. so I will say it again, TEACH THEM TO PLAY! congratulate them on good hands, dont be mean or over aggressive or get all advanced on them. First explain the hand ranks if needed ( I actually had to get my first g/f drunk to do this) then play a few hands with her with the hole cards exposed. explain how the rounds of betting and community cards work and let the magic of holdem set in.

Now go over hand rankings, and position, and tell them about how "most" poker players are completely ignorant or stupid and using simple strategy will prevail in most cash games.

Then let her/him practice his spare time away and soon the only fighting that will be going on is who gets to play first! When they get all excited about their first big winning sessions just smile and say "I love YOU!"

now i am no dr phil but i hope I can help some dwindleing flames become rekindled out there with the help of poker.

If it works for you, personally I like poker dont mind chatting about it online, but honestly I could not deal with being one of those poker couples they make me want to puke every time I see them at the casino. Often the guy is trying to teach a girl to play and is yapping in her ear and hes losing his shirt and making excuses.  She says its okay  honey. as she chases her flush and hits. Ehk. However, I have nothing against women players as to me it makes no difference just wouldnt want to be responsible for teaching a girl to play, if she already knew thats different I dont look like one of those tools that makes me so uncomfortable to watch at the card room.

if your both playing poker who's going to be doing all the other stuff that needs to get done for life to run smoothly?  somebody needs to be taking care of business(not poker business)
if your relationship is in the gutter better reevaluate why.  maybe start seeking a more independant type person.
it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
